ABSTRACT
Hyderabad is the sixth largest city in India and is also the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a bustling 400-year-old metropolis with an urban population of 6 million people spread over an area of 168 sq.km. The energy use patterns in the city are changing with the adoption of modern lifestyles. With increased motorization, there is a need for better understanding of the factors affecting traffic congestion leading to higher levels. Noise pollution from motor vehicles is one of the most serious and rapidly growing problems in the city of Hyderabad. Results of surveys conducted at five intersections in Hyderabad city revealed that the noise levels currently exceed the Central Pollution Control Board daytime noise standards.
The reduction of ambient levels is a prime requisite for the future sustainable use of personalized vehicles. This paper aims to enhance the understanding of the correlation between high noise levels and traffic congestion at selected locations in Hyderabad city. Such understanding may, hopefully aid in the development of attainable strategies.
